Tough Days for Team RadioShack

We started with four leaders for the Tour de France GC and a great plan. At this point we are down to one card to play. Jani Brajkovic went down and broke his collarbone and was the first to abandon. Then Levi Leipheimer got caught up in some bad luck with crashes at exactly the wrong moments and he could not get back to the leaders. Key time lost.Chris Horner had a scary crash into a ditch but managed to finish the stage. Sadly he didn't know what race he was in and wisely went to the hospital. A broken nose and major bruises are this year's Tour souvenirs. Andreas Kloden is our lone leader now but even he hit the deck yesterday. He didn't break anything but there is major concern about his lower back. That is key to climbing success. Today is a rest day so hopefully that will help. It is a shame to lose so many of our key riders this early but many other contenders are now out too. So far the Shlecks and Cadel Evans have come through unscathed. Even Alberto Contador has has some dodgy moments.

It has been beautiful at Lake Tahoe the last few days. Almost constant light snow equals no cycling. Six event motorcycles crashed and the race organizers took the right decision and cancelled Stage 1. Stage 2 start is now delayed and moved from Squaw Valley to Nevada City. We are heading right to the finish in Sacramento in about 45 minutes

Bjorn still in white but a sad day at the Giro

This is a great story on Bjorn Selander and his family. He is doing Team RadioShack proud at the Giro. It was a sad day yesterday with the death of Sky rider Wouter Weylandt. I believe this was the first fatal race accident in sixteen years. The teams are neutralizing today's stage out of respect. Each team takes 10k at the front of the peloton. I bet Team Sky will cross the line first with their eight remaining riders. Tough day in pro cycling.

The new documentary about Ayrton Senna has been getting great reviews. It had its debut at the Sundance Film Festival recently and was also shown at SBSW in Austin. Senna and Alain Prost are my favourite all-time F1 drivers but I am a bit nervous about the portrayal of Alain. I found the movie in Brazil on BlueRay but not sure it it will be in English. May have to wait a bit to see it.

Ben Hermans Wins in Mallorca for First 2011 Team RadioShack Victory.

Team RadioShack’s Ben Hermans won the Trofeo Inca in the third race of the Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca. The Belgian rider sprinted faster than his two companions Arkaitz Duran (Geox) and Xavier Tondo (Movistar). For Ben Hermans and Team RadioShack it is the first victory of the season.

One-hundred ninety riders started in Inca for a race over two climbs, the 2nd category Soller and the Puigmajor (1st category). “I made a big mistake in the beginning,” said Hermans. “I made a bathroom stop just 2 K before the start of the first climb. I had to start that climb between the cars as the last rider of the peloton but I knew I had to be more or less in the front at the top of the Coll de Soller as the descent was said to be very wet and slippery. I did a 6 K uphill sprint and went over the top in about 20th position. My legs still felt good. On the next climb of the Puigmajor, Movistar pulled for Tondo. I saw a lot of guys suffering, but I still felt good. That’s why I attacked at 1K from the top. Only Tondo and Duran were able to follow. We immediately took 20 seconds and in the last 40 K to the finish we built up the advantage to 1 minute with the three of us working well together. I was not so confident for the sprint, but apparently, the other two guys were still more tired than I was.”

It is Ben Herman’s second victory as a professional rider. Last year he won for Team RadioShack the queen stage in the Tour of Belgium.

“This is a nice compensation for all the work Ben did in the winter,” explained Team Director Dirk Demol. “Apart from the team training camps, he organized his own training camp in Spain, as the weather was too bad to train in Belgium. Previously in the Tour Down Under Ben was one of the best riders in the peloton. I am convinced he will win more this year.”

Merry Christmas So Far

Well we are about 60% through Senna's first Christmas. We awoke to the first white one in 18 years in Nashville. About an inch was enough to dust the ground but not the streets. Still seems likely school would have been closed if this was well and truly a school day. I got up at 4:30 as you know it is Christmas morning. The rest of the family got up at a more reasonable 6:30. As is the custom, Gene was the last to get out of bed. We started the present unwrap. So far the biggest hits, have been Rene's Christmas Armadillo, Senna's sterling brush from Tiffany, Amy's spa visit and I got a book version of The Rusted Tour de Michigan. That should give hours of opportunities for others to point out typos. Senna also got a lovely Christmas dress. At 8:45 Senna was convinced to take the first intermission and a nap. Everyone is out again. I count 18 presents to go plus a bunch to do when Grandma Shirtle returns from her excursion to the the south of north Alabama.

My Stylist Just Passed Away

My haircut between eighth and ninth grade was kind of a big deal. Or lack thereof. I got an admittedly bad short haircut right before school got out in the waning months of the eighth grade. It did not go over well with my friends who took special pleasure in making fun of me. So during the summer break I didn't really see many people, did a sort of Eric Clapton reclusive period, and let my hair grow. And grow. Came back to school looking a bit like Peter Frampton. It got down past my shoulders. So months and months later I did have to go for a haircut but could not go back to the old barber. Too cool for that and still wanted the new look. My sister had a friend and her mom had a hip hair salon in Ann Arbor. Mique was her mom's name. It was pronounced Mickie. She played loud music and told stories about local musicians. Rumour was she cut Ted Nugent and Bob Segar's hair. Mique just barely cut my hair but she talk me the art of using a blow dryer. An art that I have long stopped performing as I haven't even passed a comb over my head now since 2004. I must say she was an interesting lady and made going to the salon a fun experience. I found this blog from a writer in the Ann Arbor area and he mentioned her. Her funeral is today.
